Carolyn Van Toen is a Managing Engineer in Synaptic Analysis Consulting Group’s
Biomechanical Research Division. Ms Van Toen investigates issues involving mechanisms and
tolerances of traumatic human injury. She has expertise in the area of spine and spinal cord
injury as well as the mechanical response of biological tissues to loading. Her work includes
analysis of occupational, recreational, and transportation injuries as well as those involving
consumer products and failure of surgically implantable orthopaedic devices. Her technical
skills include finite element analysis, constitutive modeling of soft tissues, motion measurement
and analysis, impact testing, fracture detection using acoustic emission measurement, surface
electromyography, and multibody human and vehicle modelling (Madymo v 6.2, TNO
Automotive).
Ms Van Toen is a PhD Candidate in the Orthopaedic and Injury Biomechanics Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. She has previously held a position as a Research Associate at Let People Move Clinical Biomechanics Laboratory in Perugia, Italy. She has also held a position as a Mechanical Engineering Associate at MacDonald Dettwiler Robotics where she performed analyses of the space shuttle based Canadarm in collaboration with NASA engineers.
